What is the Air Cadets?
The Royal Air Force Air Cadets is one of the UK's largest youth organisations, open to young people aged 12 to 20. It offers flying, gliding, adventure training, sport, ceremonial drill, BTEC qualifications and leadership opportunities.
How old do you have to be to join?
Cadets can join from age 12 and usually stay until they are 20. The best time to join is between 12 and 16, as you can take full advantage of the camps, courses and flying opportunities on offer.
When and where do squadrons parade?
Most London Wing squadrons parade twice a week, usually on weekday evenings. Each squadron has its own parade nights and times — use our Squadron Map to find your nearest unit and check its details.
How much does it cost to join?
Cadet subscriptions are kept low, usually only a few pounds per week. Uniform, flying and most core activities are free or heavily subsidised by the RAF and the Air Cadet charity.
Do cadets get to fly?
Yes. Flying and gliding are central to the Air Cadet experience. Cadets can go on air experience flights, apply for gliding scholarships and work towards pilot and instructor qualifications.
Do I have to join the RAF?
No. There is no obligation to join the armed forces. Many cadets do go on to military or civilian aviation careers, but the skills and qualifications you gain are useful in any future path.
Can adults volunteer?
Absolutely. Adults over 20 can volunteer as uniformed staff, civilian instructors, or committee members. Full training and uniform are provided, and no previous military experience is required.
What should I bring on my first parade night?
Just bring yourself, comfortable clothes and a drink. There is no uniform needed to begin with — the squadron will issue you everything you need once you have settled in.
Can girls join the Air Cadets?
Yes. The Air Cadets has been co-educational for many years and welcomes young people of all genders and backgrounds.
